Annual Alabama Green Party State Convention Minutes

Joy Johnson, interim state chair called the meeting to order and members made brief introductions. Also in attendance were Amy Fahimi, Rick, Jason Meares and Larry Fenton. For the first item on the agenda Joy called for elections of officers. She explained the importance of filling these positions in order to keep the party going. She read the description and duties of each officer before calling for nominations. The election results are as follows:

Amy Fahimi: Recruitment and Party Building

Larry Fenton: Media Relations and Outreach. Jason

Meares who is Green Party of Madison Co. chair will not hold a state office but will help out all officers as needed. Each office shall be held for one year.

Next, Rick led a discussion about outreach and recruitment of new members. He made the following comments:

• Consider reaching out to people who are already well known in the community to encourage them to promote the party and run for office. We need to reach out to everyone

• Educators would be effective at promoting the Green agenda.

• We need to widely broaden our appeal. Reach out to single issue voters. For example, start conversations with those who are concerned about voter fraud, speaking out against Israel, etc. Don’t stereotype people or assume they won’t be interested in discussing issues just because they belong to a different political party.

• Talk about what we can do instead of talking about Trump.

• Consider radical as a brand. Unite unhappy people and change the dialogue.

• Have an “elevator pitch” to explain the Green Party. The four pillars and 10 key values are helpful. Be open to having dialogues with many people.

Larry discussed his previous extensive participation in the Green Party of California. He has held GP office. Green Party has a big presence there. He also mentioned opportunities in his area for outreach. He could set up a booth at the 1st Friday event in Gadsden.

Joy discussed the need to grow chapters around the state. We discussed organization of known active contacts to grow the party. People participating in any way will be considered active. Joy also mentioned having a GP of AL state podcast to discuss the GP platform. We also discussed showing documentary films as a chapter activity.

The next meeting will be August 23rd 5pm online.
